ok. me and peter fly from mpls to oslo. stayed with ina and family. next we went to bø, 3 hours outside of oslo.. stayed with my good friend anniep who is/was going to school there. next was stockholm, stayed on a ship/hostel, things were getting expensive, weather was getting cold.. we were ready to move on down.. naturally denmark next, copenhagen. didn't care much for that city, so we cruised down to berlin, didn't stay, but knew we could get pretty much anywhere we wanted to go through the Berlin station... we were going to goto dresden, but the next train wasn't for 9 more hours... so we headed off to leipzig, germany instead. had a wonderful time there. next was prague. stayed there for a week. nice but very very touristy. we were now ready for the country again, we heard about a cozy little town called chesky krumlov, and decided to head there. i loved it. stayed about a week, then it was time to move on again. vienna, austria was next, stayed with a girl and here family, and once again, me and peter had a wonderful time. from there we went to budapest, hungary. one of my favorite cities... after that we headed down south hungary to szeged. from there we went to brasov, very beautiful, very cheap... small(er). then onto sofia, bulgaria, stayed with a group of people we knew... onto greece, salonica, then athens, big ship to create, rained on us the whole time.. 5 days of horrible weather. we left, back to the mainland, then on another ship to bari, italy. from bari to messinal. next day onto syracuse. after syracuse we backtracked through sicily and stayed in catania. then upto rome. me and peter parted. peter went to barcelona and i stayed in rome and then headed up to florence. we both met back up at the airport in paris. and we flew home. start from the beginning!

the fish returneth. Well, I survived the freezing french weather in Avignon and Paris, survived being held-up by a Barcelona junkie with a hypodermic needle, survived Pj's attempts to choke me---and for all of it, I think I am a better man. It is mighty mighty nice being back home. Special thanks must go out to Evans and Fam, who pulled a perfect stranger off the Paris streets and into their home. Peace to all.

wow. its been a long haul. but ive made it, im home now. i took a night train from flornece to paris and flew from paris to detriot then onto minneapolis. met this french dude on the train from florence to paris who would not stop talking to me.. .and the crazy thing was, he spoke no english, i speak no french, but this didnt stop him. he was getting all excited. couldnt shut the guy up!~ i just wanted to sleep. got to paris at 9am. i had no idea where to go, and had no franks, i wasnt about to hit the atm just for a metro ride, so i set down my bag and begged for money... then god sent down a little angel. this girl came up to me, and asked if i needed help, if i was okay. she took me to the airport herself.. i would never have found the way. thanks liz! met up with peter at the airport. exchanged stories... mine where better. i looked at peter, i said lets go home peter, lets go home. we hopped on the plane and started are full day jouney home. our parents were at the airport waiting for us. we are all home now, the whole family. and it is good. my mother and one of my sisters cooked a yummy meal. and it was good. my room! clean and warm. and only mine... the bathroom and showers! i took so much for granted! i appreciate everything. im about ready to go appreciate my bed right now. so this is it. feel free to add your email address still, i will still be sending out mailings whenever i update the euro-page. (.. when i add more pictures ect.) it will take a bit for any to go up. im tired and i have many projects i am working on... anyhow. this trip was great. i really could not have had it better. i met some really great people.. stayed at some really great places, saw so much... me and peter came out alive and not hating eachother.. we have never spent more than a week side-by-side, we both had no idea how we would do our 2 and half month trip together. bit of advise. before you marry your girlfriend/boyfriend, take her/him on a two month trip. if it works marry. you two will be able to make it through anything... i truely believe this. thanks everyone who put us up! who fed us! who loved us! thanks friends and family for following along on me and my bro's journey. thanks for the emails and bits of advise. euro-2001 pj, signing off (merry christmas!)

Peter the fish is going strong in B-town. Barthelona, as the locals call it, is a nice, cosmopolitan, international, up and coming city. It´´s definitely a city of the present, in contrast to old old towns like Rome and Athens, that exist in the present as monuments to their own pasts. There are an awful lot of homeless folk, shady moroccans, junkies and gitano circus types--all who tend to get in your face. The people here speak Catalan, and Spanish is a second language, so all the street signs look funny. But I have been using my spanish like crazy, and that´´s a lot of fun. Everyone is really helpful and friendly. I asked a lady in the supermarket a simple question yesterday, and she ended up taking me on a tour of the city. Did you know you can buy beer here at Macdonald´´s?

took a trian from catania, to rome. 11 hours. it was a beautiful train ride.. right along the toe and up, moutains everwhere, the ocean, blue and green... little town, orange trees everywhere. i really wanted to stay at least one day in rome... i would love to chill a little longer, but pete really wants to move (story of this trip). but i have already seen rome, so, i can understand. but there is so much. its by far one of my favorite cities... so last night. we get here around 10pm.. and head striaght for the hotel de artistes, a place i stayed two years ago and remember it being cheap and fun... it had changed... was expensive and looked kinda poopy. so we took of, walked out on the street, all of a sudden this kid goes scootin by on a skateboard... and its jason baerh.. i guy i worked with all summer long! here in rome! at 10:40pm... this city is so big you couldnt plane to meet someone if you tried. it just makes you think... think how many people you know, but just miss eachothers paths... by seconds.. peter bumped into a guy that he had met on his last trip here in rome a year ago. today there was a protest going on. soo many people, ivenever seen so many young people in one area.. me and peter tried crossing, and right when we did, they charged... just all started running... like a pack of wild horses! and so we statrted to run to the other side of the road, to get out of the way... but it was too late for me... i was in the middle. i kept on going.. knocking people over, i looked back and they were just getting trampled over and over.. it was insane. we saw he trevi fountain, the birthday cake, (holly roman forum, it was closed, so just from the outside, id already seen it.. so) spanish steps. saw lots today, lots of which we had no idea what it was.. we walked and walked... we are staying at the yellow hostel. trying to figure out how to get to barcelona tomorrow... from barcelona to paris, and home. the euro-2001-trip-of-love-hour-glass is running out... but not yet fool! shnizza

met some Sicilians here at the hostel last night, and they took us around town last night and brought us to an "authentic" Sicilian resturant today, where i had the pleasure of dining on cooked horsemeat--a dish peculiar to the island. It was mighty good! I dont think i will ever be able to ride a horse again without salivating a little. Perhaps pony is especially tender... This is the land of ten trillion scooters, theyre everywhere, alng with these tiny three wheeled pick up trucks called "apes". Another novel peculuarity here in Sicily is the kissing. It is polite, upon meeting or leaving a friend to kiss them on both cheeks--and it doesnt matter if they are male or female, which has taken some getting used to. There certainly isnt the same Northern concept of personal space, which I think is just fine. Weather has been unremitting in its poopyness. ciao, ---the fish.

yo. sicilia is good. im getting by fine with words I learned from the Godfather movies and a few spanish words thrown in. Disapointed with mafia for giving us no welcome whatsoever. Gonna send em a message... The food, wine, and weather--all of which are represented by classical dieties, and for good reason--are unsurpassed in our travels thus far. Greece was a bummer, poo weather and a well worn tourist infrastructure that kept out anything exciting or unexpected. Especially after wild romania. But had the weather been nice we probably would have loved it. One thing I forgot to mention: Chauga dancing in Bulgaria. Remind me to tell you about it when I get back.

another bleary day in Crete. Here we are in the very southernmost point of Europe, and we are hit with rain and cold windy weather. The locals are begining to suspect we are to blame, and we may soon be sacrificed to zeus for appeasment. The Greeks are the most accustomed to tourists and probably for this, the most unfriendly of all the countries we've past through. They are also the heftiest people we've seen since we left the States. The weatehr has brought some rough seas, though. Yesterday we watched huge waves pounding against the breakwall, flooding the areas surrounding the harbor and seriously punishing some of the structures and cars there. Sadly, they were unsurfable, since the high winds blew off the crests before they could stack up. pj nd I have been making the best of it though---saw Harry Potter amidst a sea of chattering greek children yesterday. Special shot out to Radislava and her mom. You were excedingly hospitable and I greatly appreciate all the great Bulgarian food and all the time you took off from scholl for us Rady. Shots must also go out to UltraAlex the Smooth Sofian and his sidekick DeviousDez. Hope all is well back in Sof. Well, pj keeps calling me dirty and I suppose he's right. But not for long. hello. we are in greece, as far south as you can go, and its still kinda cold!! we are on the western side of crete. we are staying in a little village.. we have a nice pension, cheap, clean, really friendly, moped rentals close by, internet closeby, markets everywhere. the toilets are odd, squatters, just holes, toilet paper goes into a basket... kinda primal. me and peter are beat@@@ we left thessaloniki, took a train to athens(tried to, we got kicked off for some reason in some small town, they booted us right off because we wouldnt pay them $30 (scam!!) (we had our interrail passes, they said they were no good... grrrr) so we arrived in athens at 7pm, took the metro to peasa, and a ship, a big old ship, was leaving to crete at 8, we made it by 5 minutes... the boat was mongo, pool, two resturants, a disco dance floor, bars bars bars... we got a cabin and slept like babies... until 6am, (ten hour trip) we arrived and were woken by the staff... we then went to the airport to check on flights... to italy, but no luck. so we took a bus to here, rymothiskos, i dont know the name... we are tired, but we did it... peter only gets mean when hes hungary, so i brought some candy bars with me, when he started getting snippy, i unwrapped one and threw it to him, he ate it like a jungle-cat, and he was happy. if only it was that easy with me. hes happy, im happy, we are in crete. pj

Came back to Rady's house, and her mom fed us another outrageous Bulgarian meal, with delcious shopska salad and bulgarian wieners and lots of rakia--a heated brandy with honey. We are quite the novelty for Danka--rady's mom--since we are the first americans she has ever met. Sofia is lovely--the highest capital in Europe. You can see majestic mountians all around. translyvania is at a pretty high altitude, so we climbed off the train at 4 this morning to find snow everywhere. it looks lovely on the rooftops and the surrounding mountains, giving the city the feel of the holidays. translyvania does have the dark and brooding dracula feel to it. its all mountains and castles and dark haired people who speak english with an accent amusingly similar to that of the Count of sesame street. This is also the cheapest country we have visited yet. I almost feel a little guilty. Educational tidbit: Dracula means "son of the dragon" and was a semi historical personage. Bram Stoker's creation was based on a figure from the 15th century named vlad the impaler who discouraged the ottoman advance by his inclination to impale turkish p.o.w.s, sometimes impaling handfuls during feasts at his castle for sport. he did not, as far as we know, dine on plasma or sleep in a coffin or turn into a bat.

(there WAS a reason behind naming it just that... the bathrooms, need i say more..) i went caving with some others from the hostel... it was really fun. we had big jumpsuits on.. helmets, all of us way underground.. geting dirty... i got stuck while trying to go through 'winnie the pooh', it was this crazy small hole i thought id try to fit through for fun, i got stuck... it hurt so bad, but i made it through... i looked at the hole that i passed through and i couldnt believe it... there was this one part, the sandwich of death, were he, the group leader, had me leade the way because he had to go back to get the others... so there i am, in pain still from going through the pooh, and hes having me lead the way... he tells me in broken english, take lefts, and rights, big rock go under, watch out for 30ft drop. bla blah... it was tiny, it was a crack in two rocks, it was tight!! i could go on, but i wont, because i cant, our train is leaving soon!!! shoot! gotta run.. were are donig well, if you dont hear from me or peter, thats because we are in romania... and possibly dead. take care. pj

We went to a little town fair where some traditional dancing was going down, and we got pulled in by soem austian lasses and danced like the devils we are. we also journied to a lake, but it waws windy and cold, so we didn#t stick around too long. the weatehr didn#t stop one yound skinny dipping enthusiast, who disrobed in front of all and jumped right in. Were now kicking ourselves for not capturing it on film. just another day in the life of peter a. fish.

krumlov is a nice break from the big cities. It's built right on the banks of the mighty valtava river, and I've tried for two days to rent a canoe, to no avail. Tried to rent horses too, another bust. We did manage to get ahold of two bikes, so we pedaled off into some rolling fields surrounded by evergreen forests. It's awfully inexpensive here. We ate out last night at a medieval style eatspot, got a big woodblock piled with meat, bought a few rounds of frothy local brew, and I had two desserts, all for about 4.50. Came back to our hostel and some chick had a bunch of simpsons episodes on tape, so we watched those for a few hours. Reading Augustine's Confessions.

He also loves movies, so we,ve seen I think 5, more than I've seen in the past two years. They're really cheap. Too many tourists in Prague! I'm ready to head to a small little village in the czech countryside. Pj and I befriended a homeless girl named Eva, and she told us some intersting stories. Eva walks around the city with her german shepherd, who is both her protector and her best friend. I bought a bag of bread and I've been giving that to all the beggers when they ask for change, and that works pretty well. Haven't quite figured out a good way to respond to the pot-sellers who hound us fifty times a day. Suggestions?
